Indulgence
In my 2006 Australian Wine Companion, Wonga Estate was one of the 10 best new wineries (out of a field of 172). In the upcoming 2007 Wine Companion (due out in August), Turner's Crossing and Yarrloch will be two of the 10 best (out of a field in excess of 200).
In 2002, Carlei made the Green Vineyards cabernet sauvignon from Turner's Crossing grapes; it had significant show success and also greatly impressed from a winemaking viewpoint. His production in 2003 extended to a shiraz and a shiraz-viognier blend, and has done so each year since. By then he had joined Jenkins and Phil Bennett in partnership with Turner's Crossing, further cementing the ties.
Turner's Crossing 2004 Shiraz Viognier (95 points) is medium-bodied, it's rich, sweet black and red fruits clearly lifted by the 4 per cent viognier component, the oak deliberately downplayed and the alcohol only 14 per cent.
